Why Strength Training Is the Best For Weight Loss
Why strength training is better than cardio for weight loss…
Many of us when trying to lose weight choose to spend lots of time on the treadmill running thinking the more cardio the more weight we will lose. Recent research has looked at the difference between cardio and strength training for weight loss and showed strength training has more of a benefit to weight loss than cardio.
Whilst you’ll most likely to burn more calories during cardiovascular exercise, weight training will keep that slow burn going all day long leading to a larger and more sustained calorie burn over the course of the day, thus boosting metabolism.
Research shows that those who just did strength training experiences a greater loss in fat as well as a significant increase in strength and lean muscle mass.
High intensity interval training has similar benefits to traditional cardio.
Cardio and strength training are the two most popular exercises, however high intensity interval training has been shown to have similar benefits as traditional cardio. Typically a HIIT workout lasts anywhere from 10-20 minutes so perfect for busy mums with limited time. One study compared the calories burned from 30 minutes HIIT compared to hiking/biking and running. The research showed that the HIIT burned 20-30% more calories than the other forms of exercise.
How to use weight training for weight loss
Whilst you can build muscle with body weight, research has shown that calisthenics is a form of resistance training that predominantly uses your own bodyweight to build strength and size. To push your muscles to change you have to regularly train them to fatigue using weights for example, dumbbells. With any weight training program simple is best, if you are a beginner to weight training do not overcomplicate it with a complex strength program.
